McGRATHPR.com – Sandwich Arts Alliance (SAA), an artist-driven nonprofit organization supporting the region’s arts and artists, presents a spring events season featuring visual, performing, and literary arts events and programs, serving the Cape Cod community, at 124 Route 6A, Sandwich and other community venues.  SAA is home to a beautiful art gallery, gift shop, and bookstore, featuring the works of local and regional artists in gallery openings, exhibits, and special events. Visual Arts:

Sandwich Arts Alliance’s Visual Arts group is comprised of creative people of all ages, interests, and abilities, creating visual art in any two- or three-dimensional media. The group’s goal is to aesthetically enrich and develop the Sandwich community’s appreciation for the visual arts through workshops, demonstrations, openings, exhibits, and sales year-round.  Members’ artwork is displayed at town venues, in “pop-up” art shows, art auctions and is sold at SAA’s in-house gift shop and online store. The Adirondack Chair Trail 2023 Reveal Event

Saturday, May 13, 11 am to 4 pm, Sandwich Arts Alliance Center, 124 Rte. 6A, Sandwich

The Adirondack Chair Trail returns to Sandwich this summer with 25 gorgeous Adirondack chairs, each uniquely decorated by an accomplished SAA artist. Join us for the 2023 ACT ‘Sneak Peek’ and see all 25 in the SAA Center parking lot before they go to their summer homes at sponsor locations. Chair trail maps will be available online, at the SAA Center, and the Sandwich Chamber of Commerce. Visit them all and mark your calendars for the Adirondack Chair Trail Auction at The Sagamore Inn on Wed., Aug. 23, 5:30-7:30 pm where you may be the highest bidder on your favorite chair!  

Workshops:

Drawing Fundamentals and Foundational Techniques:  presented by Instructor Leonie Little-Lex

Sunday, March 26, 1 to 4 pm, Sandwich Arts Alliance Center Gallery, 124 Route 6A, Sandwich

​ $70 members, $75 non-members, plus $20 materials fee paid to instructor at first class

Drawing can feel daunting or complicated, especially if we don’t know where to begin. Everything can be broken down into manageable steps, including the fundamentals, such as basic shapes, shading, sketching and pencil use, line work, and more. Attendees first explore foundational techniques before turning their attention to rendering objects from nature. A perfect workshop for drawing beginners or for those who just want to brush up on drawing skills.  Geared towards adults but can be enjoyed by older children/teens (recommended age 10 and up). Parent/child duos encouraged!

Drawing & Watercolor – Marine Life:  presented by Instructor Leonie Little-Lex

Sunday, April 23, 1 to 4 pm, Sandwich Arts Alliance Center Gallery, 124 Route 6A, Sandwich

​ $70 members, $75 non-members, plus $20 materials fee paid to instructor at first class

Come lea​rn how to capture the majestic beauty of a whale, the funny personality of a seal, or the flowing coils of an octopus. The first part of the workshop will focus on rendering sea creatures and their basic shapes, in the second part we will transfer your favorite drawing to watercolor paper and use mixed-media techniques to create a beautiful, full-color painting! No drawing or painting experience required. Can be enjoyed by older children/teens (recommended age 10 and up). Parent/child duos encouraged!

Needle Felting – Owls:  presented by Instructor Isabel Sterns

Thursday, May 4, 2 to 5 pm, Sandwich Arts Alliance Center Gallery, 124 Route 6A, Sandwich

A fun-filled introduction to the basic needle felting techniques through a dive into the sea with felted mermaids! Great for all skill levels; all materials are included.

Sandwich Showcase Open Mic

Wednesdays, April 5, and May 3, 7 to 9 pm, Cafe Chew, 4 Merchants Road, Sandwich, Walk-in registration, $10 donation requested at the door

​Do you sing? Play an instrument? Can you tell a story, read a poem, do a monologue, improv, stand-up comedy? Consider reading the latest chapter of your new book, play, or screenplay. 12th Annual Fat Ass Cancer Bitch Show: Bite Me

Get your yearly fix of the “Fat Ass Cancer Bitch,” as writer-performer-storyteller Christine Ernst returns to present her 12th annual one-woman show with a new fresh and unfiltered collection of fun!

Vento Chiaro

Friday, March 31, 7 pm, ​First Church of Sandwich, 136 Main Street, Sandwich, tickets: $20

Vento Chiaro performs in a one-night-only concert, as one of the country’s foremost woodwind quintets, and has also served as the woodwind quintet in residence at the Boston University Tanglewood Institute since 2002. The five-musician ensemble captivates audiences with engaging performances and inspiring residencies. Performing artists include Ona Jonaityte, flute, Elizabeth England, oboe, Chi-Ju Juliet Lai, clarinet, Anne Howarth, horn, and Sam Childers, bassoon. 

Vento Chiaro has garnered top prizes in prestigious chamber music competitions including the silver medal at the Fischoff Chamber Music Competition and the Saunderson Award at the Coleman Chamber Music Competition.

Staged Reading – Uncertainty – An Original Play by local playwright Gary Vacon

A theoretical physicist and confirmed atheist is married to a theology professor with an equally strong faith in God.   They love each other deeply as they have found they can revel in an open philosophical discussion of their opposing philosophies. However, their relationship is strained by differing views of how best to care for their daughter who was “disabled” from birth.   A staged reading with lighting and minimal sets.

Harvard Baroque

Saturday, May 6, 7 pm, The Glass Town Stage, Sandwich Town Hall, ​130 Main Street, Sandwich, tickets: $20

Harvard Baroque Chamber Orchestra, winner of the prestigious Erwin Bodky Award for excellence in early music, is a small chamber orchestra dedicated to bringing back to life the vivid rhetoric and dancing rhythms of baroque music. The ensemble was founded by Robert Mealy, the current director of the Juilliard School’s Historical Performance Program, and Dr. Murray Somerville, Gund University Organist and Choirmaster emeritus. The orchestra utilizes Harvard’s historic baroque bows and instruments from its Early Instrument Collection in performances.

Literary Arts:

Sandwich Arts Alliance’s Literary Arts Group supports writers by developing writing skills, promoting sales, facilitating contacts, an information exchange, and in peer relationships. The Group’s local authors’ books are sold online and in the gallery bookshop. “The Sandwich Boardwalk” Book Launch Event

Thursday, April 27, 3 to 7 pm, Sandwich Arts Alliance Center, 124 Rte. 6A, Sandwich

SAA will be hosting a special book launch event for their new 153-page coffee table art book, “The Sandwich Boardwalk,” about our beloved landmark of beach days and bridge leaps, marsh, and river, fun and sun, and storm-swept beauty. Literary members contributed poems, history, and prose; performers offered poetry and a song; and visual arts members and Forestdale and Oak Ridge students offered their artwork in this tribute collection. Stop by to meet the contributors and purchase a book to share with all Sandwich Boardwalk lovers!  Funded in part by Mass Cultural Council and Sandwich Cultural Council.

Writer’s Networking

Wednesdays, April 12 and May 10, 11 am to 12 noon, Sandwich Arts Alliance Center, 124 Rte. 6A, Sandwich

This exchange, open to all, is held on the second Wednesday of each month. It offers a variety of programs from speakers to casual, convivial information exchanges on writing and publishing. ​

A Gathering of Poets

Tuesdays, March 21, April 18, and May 16, 2:30 to 3:30 pm, Sandwich Arts Alliance Center, 124 Rte. 6A, Sandwich

A supportive and informative poetry critique group, meeting monthly on third Tuesdays, All are welcome.  Attendees read their poems aloud each session, consider suggestions, and make observations.

The Writers’ Critique Group

Thursdays, April 6, 20, May 4, and 18, 1 to 2 pm, Sandwich Arts Alliance Center, 124 Rte. 6A, Sandwich

This group of writers meets on the first and third Thursdays of each month.  A chapter of a current project is emailed to members of the group, read, and critiqued, and brought to the meeting where it is read aloud and further discussed.  Supportive, encouraging, and informative.  All are welcome.

Children’s Book Writers

Thursdays, March 23, April 27, May 25, 1 to 2 pm, Sandwich Arts Alliance Center, 124 Rte. 6A, Sandwich

This is a new group of writers who want to publish children’s books. We will bring our latest work to read aloud and receive comments and suggestions.

Founded in 2015, Sandwich Arts Alliance (SAA) is an artist-driven nonprofit organization supporting the arts and artists – serving as a platform for new works, cultivating the creative economy, and culturally enriching  the Sandwich and greater Cape Cod communities.

Sandwich Arts Alliance is comprised of four groups that meet regularly: Visual Arts, Performing Arts, Literary Arts and Friends of the Arts.  Membership is open to all artists and friends residing in Sandwich and beyond.  As part of its mission, SAA collaborates with other nonprofit and community-based organizations to help promote a wide variety of cultural programming.
