South Shore Conservatory Youth Chorus (SSCYC) invites singers in grades three through six who are interested in participating in its 2018/19 season of SSC Youth Chorus to an open rehearsal/pizza party.
The mission of SSC Youth Chorus is to bring students together to sing and learn in a supportive environment and foster a sense of community and joy through music. Chorus rehearsals are Monday afternoons, 5 to 6 pm. The group performs three times during the year.
SSC Youth Chorus Conductor Peter Mundt’s goal for the ensemble is to grow his students’ love of singing and performing. A Marshfield resident and music educator with over 25 years of experience, Mundt provides students with exciting musical experiences that challenge them in a safe and supportive environment. In addition to teaching general music to elementary students in the Scituate Public Schools system, Mundt is a guitarist, bassist and singer who performs in and around the South Shore and Boston.

South Shore Conservatory Youth Orchestra (SSCYO) invites school-aged musicians interested in being part of the 2018/19 season to two audition nights.
SSCYO brings together string, wind and percussion students from the South Shore, to learn, grow and perform as a community of musicians. Rehearsals take place at the Marshfield High School Music Suite on Wednesday evenings from 6 to 8 pm, beginning September 26. Both Symphony and Repertory ensembles have openings for the upcoming season.

Opera Theater of Cape Cod, the region’s debuting professional opera company, premieres with two performances of The Tragedy of Carmen, a chamber opera adaptation of Bizet’s beloved opera, preserving all of its famous arias and duets. These performances are a new English translation by Music Director Joseph Turbessi, with stage direction by Ethan DePuy.
OTCC’s The Tragedy of Carmen is a modern spin on the renowned tale of seduction, obsession, and tragedy. The opera explores the intense romance between Carmen, a powerful woman who has risen through the ranks in the criminal underworld, and Don José, a soldier who leaves his military post and hometown sweetheart, Micaela, to be with Carmen. Don José’s passion for the intoxicating Carmen turns to violence when she falls for the handsome bullfighter, Escamillo. The conclusion of Brook’s adaptation focuses on Carmen’s choice to be true to herself in accepting her fate. Contains adult themes, recommended for mature audiences.
Cast in the performance are Eileen Christiansen (Carmen), Fran Rogers (Don José), Kathryn McKellar (Micaela) and Andrew Miller (Escamillo).
As a new chamber opera company dedicated to bringing high quality and accessible opera performances to the Cape Cod community, OTCC’s vision is to enrich Cape Cod’s vital art scene with exquisite singing and storytelling. The company’s founding members are on a mission to ignite the Cape community’s passion for opera, from longtime opera lovers to audience members new to the art form.

Weekend Classics Concert and Reception: Calyx Trio

The Calyx Piano Trio performs a concert of delightful, melodic and important works by three distinguished female composer/pianists. Germaine Tailleferre (1892-1983) is the only female composer in the renowned group “Les Six.” Tailleferre’s sonorous trio is a later work composed in 1978, 40 years before Berkeley composer Beth Denisch’s Factor Fiction (2018) was written for the Calyx Trio. Denisch’s trio explores expressions of love and joy as essential responses to current political times. Clara Wieck Schumann was a major concert artist in her time noted for her sparkling technique and performances without music. Also an accomplished composer like her husband Robert and close friend Johannes Brahms, the Trio in G Minor was one of this virtuoso pianist’s finest works. After the performance, guests are invited to join musicians Catherine French, Nina Ferrigno and Jennifer Lucht for an elegant wine reception in the art gallery. Tickets available at jameslibrary.org.

The first of two free “Weekend Classics Encore” series performances at the James. Music for Food is a musician-led initiative to fight hunger in our local communities. Performances transform music into food, nourishing ears and bodies. Now embarking on its 8th season in Boston, Music for Food was founded by Grammy award winning violist Kim Kashkashian in 2010. The Meadowlark Piano Trio hails from America’s heartland. Formed by three best friends in 2012, the trio has since performed nationwide to great acclaim, and they were named semi-finalists in the 2017 Fischoff International Chamber Music Competition. These New England Conservatory artist fellows represent Music for Food as they perform for free, asking audience members to make donations in lieu of purchasing tickets. All donations benefit Interfaith Social Services’ food pantry.

The Academy of The Company Theatre welcomes youth actors ages 8 to 15 to audition for Disney’s Mulan Jr., directed by Kevin Mark Kline, with music direction by Melissa Carubia and choreography by John Crampton.
In Disney’s Mulan Jr., the setting is ancient China, and the Huns have invaded. The young girl Mulan defies the village matchmaker, takes up arms, and disguises herself as a boy in order to serve in the army. With her mischievous dragon Mushu by her side, Mulan prepares for a great battle, where she must choose between revealing her true identity as a girl or saving all of China with her master plan. Based on the Disney animated film, Mulan Jr. brings this ancient world to life with memorable hit songs and a story that warmly celebrates bravery, culture, and honor.
Actors, singers and dancers are needed and should plan to attend both days of auditions, which includes learning a song, movement, and character work. Students of all ethnic backgrounds are encouraged to audition. Not all audition candidates will be cast. A complete rehearsal and production week schedule will be available at auditions.
Mulan Jr. performances are November 2 through 4, from Friday through Sunday, matinee and evening performances are available. Tickets are $18 for students, $20 for adults, available at companytheatre.com.

Music Directors William B. Richter and Elizabeth Chapman Reilly welcome newcomers of all skill levels to learn about PFC and audition for vocal placement, if they wish. Rehearsals for the winter season begin at 7 pm immediately following. This year’s winter concert, Carols for the 21st Century, highlights some of the best contemporary British choral composers for a concert of both traditional carols and original compositions.
PFC is an auditioned choral group for male and female vocalists of all skill levels with about 80 active members, dedicated to the performance of choral music from many genres. Launching their nineteenth season, PFC typically performs major concerts in the winter and spring each year. Pilgrim Festival Singers, a PFC offshoot singing ensemble, performs an annual summer concert of lighter music, and also engages in occasional appearances at local community events.
Rehearsals throughout the season are held on Monday nights from 7 to 9 pm. Performances will be held on Saturday, December 1 at 7:30 pm, and Sunday December 2 at 4:00 pm, at St. Bonaventure Parish, 803 State Road, Plymouth.

Tim Evans takes the baton as music director. The inspiring concert offers a treasure trove of unforgettable stories and songs, including, The Rose”, “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy”, “Second Hand Rose”, “Happy Days are Here Again”, “Broadway Baby”, Hello Dolly”, and more. It is worth noting that all three women played the role of Dolly Levi, in “Hello Dolly”, an energetic, charismatic, determined woman with heart.

Originally written in 1820, Washington Irving’s haunting narrative tells the story of a local schoolmaster whose lonely journey home tuns into a night of delightful terror when he is met on the road by the Headless Horseman. This classic tale was re-imagined for Americana Theatre Company by founding Artistic Director, Derek Martin as a 45-minute show sure to delight from beginning to end.
