The Company Theatre to Hold Open Auditions for Oliver!

McGRATHPR.com – The award-winning Company Theatre announces non-equity open call auditions for the musical classic Oliver! on Monday, September 17, 6:30 to 8 pm for children, 7:30 pm for adults, at The Company Theatre Center for Performing Arts, 30 Accord Park Drive, Norwell.  Callbacks will be held on Tuesday, September 18.  Oliver!s book, music and lyrics are by Lionel Bart. The show is directed by Zoe Bradford and Jordie Saucerman, with music direction by Steve Bass and choreography by Sally Forrest.  All roles are open for casting.  Further information and a rehearsal schedule will be available at auditions.

The beloved Charles Dickens novel springs to life in Lionel Bart’s musical that has become an international classic. Follow the young orphan boy Oliver on a wild adventure through Victorian England as he encounters such colorful characters as the cruel undertaker Mr. Sowerbury, the charmingly clever street waif known as the Artful Dodger, the conniving yet charismatic Fagin and his gang of child pickpockets, the sinister Bill Sykes and the warm-hearted Nancy. “Consider yourself at home” with this bigger than life, action-packed,
humorous tale of loyalty and ultimately, finding love. A perfect offering for the whole family during the holiday season.

Character Descriptions

Oliver Twist, a lonely orphan boy born in the workhouse. Sweet and innocent. Age range: 8-11. Soprano.

Fagin, a conniving and crafty criminal, takes in homeless boys and teaches them to pick pockets . Although a dark character, he has a humorous side he uses to his advantage. Age range: 40-75. Baritone.

Nancy, Bill Sykes’ lover, heart of gold. She takes a liking to Oliver and becomes protective of him. Age range 22-32. Alto.

Mr. Brownlow, Oliver’s grandfather, a kind man of wealth and breeding. Age range: 55-85. Will be included in ensemble scenes.

Bill Sykes, Nancy’s brutal and abusive lover, a burglar and her eventual murderer. Age range: 30-50. Baritone.

Bullseye, Bill Sykes’ bull terrier—important role —looking for a dog—can be older, who takes to simple commands.  Email [email protected] for an audition appointment.

Mr. Bumble, the comedic, pompous beadle of the workhouse in which Oliver was born. Age range: 35-50. High baritone.

The Artful Dodger, the cleverest of Fagin’s pickpockets, he introduces Fagin to Oliver. Age range: 9-15. Soprano.

Mr. and Mrs. Sowerberry, the insensitive couple who take in Oliver and use him in their funeral business. Age ranges: 40-60. Baritone and Soprano. Will be included in ensemble scenes.

Charlotte Sowerberry, the rude and  flirtatious daughter of the Sowerberrys. Age range: 14-21. Will be included in ensemble

Noah Claypole, The Sowerberrys’ apprentice, he bullies Oliver and enjoys a flirtatious relationship with Charlotte. Age range: 13-21. Will be included in ensemble

Bet, Nancy’s loyal friend. Age range: 20-32. Will be included in “Who Will Buy” and in ensemble scenes.

Old Sally, provides the key to Oliver’s past. Age range: 60-85. Will be included in ensemble scenes.

Dr. Grimwig, foppish doctor and friend of Mr. Brownlow.  Age range: 30-80. Will be included in ensemble scenes.

Charley Bates, one of Fagin’s pickpockets. He is Dodger’s sidekick. Age range: 9-15. Will be included in ensemble scenes.

Mrs. Bedwin, house-servant to Mr. Brownlow and caretaker of Oliver. Age range: 35-55. Soprano. Will be included in ensemble scenes.

Orphans, 16-20 boys or girls who can pass for boys aged 7-14

Fagin’s Gang, 8-10 boys or girls who can pass for boys aged 8-15 are members of Fagin’s pickpocket gang. Need to be able to sing and dance, and will also appear as orphans at the workhouse.

Citizens of London, all ages and types for ensemble

Audition candidates should be strong singers, arrive prepared to sing a song from the show in the show key, or a song in a similar musical theater style.  Candidates are encouraged to dress appropriately for movement.  Actors are advised to bring a headshot or snapshot, a resume is helpful, but not required.   The score will be available, and an audition accompanist will be provided.  Rehearsals being September 20, held on Monday and Thursday evenings and Sunday afternoons.

Performances of Oliver! are held from November 23 through December 16, from Thursday through Sunday, evening and matinee performances are available.
