Creative Arts Therapies Open House

SSC’s Creative Arts Therapies department faculty offer the opportunity to participate in a variety of creative arts activities offered at SSC, including music, creative dance, and accessible yoga. Music therapists encourage participants to try their hand at playing drums, participating in a hand chime ensemble, exploring individual lesson opportunities (piano, guitar, voice, drums, other instruments), or by singing along and playing instruments with a group. Yoga instructors encourage exploration of yoga positions, stretches, and chants, while creative movement specialists and SSC’s dance therapist direct participants in moving to music, and utilizing octaband and dance streamers.
Designed for those interested in learning more about the creative arts, the open house provides an ideal opportunity for attendees to meet others, have fun, and enjoy refreshments.

There’s never a good time to find yourself on the roof, twelve flights above the sidewalk, not sure if you’re alone. And a cold midnight, in the fog, two months after the sudden death of a big shot detective who just happens to be your father? It’d be hard to come up with a worse. In Noir Hamlet, Will Hamlet gets the better of rival detective Paolo Niro, discovers the truth of his father’s death, keeps his mother Gertrude from marrying the guy who may have aced him, and holds on to the love of his secretary Rae Chio. What’s better for the City of Angels, justice or violent revenge? It’s a case with more twists than a gallows necktie, and Hamlet will be lucky to keep his own neck out of the squeezer.
Noir Hamlet is a new and wild re-imagining of the Shakespeare classic. Set in 1949, the action takes place in and round about Los Angeles, including the building that houses Elsinore Detective Agency, Hamlet’s family home: a morgue! The Falmouth Chorale, led by Artistic Director John Yankee, presents In Paradisum – “heavenly” selections from 19th and 20th century composers including Daniel Pinkham’s Wedding Cantata, Psalm 42 (As the Hart Longs) by Felix Mendelssohn, and Gabriel Fauré’s Requiem. The Chorale and its Chamber Singers will be joined by soprano Joan Kirchner, baritone Philip Lima and chamber orchestra. The Fauré Requiem, one of the most beloved works in the choral repertory, is notable for its calm and gentle treatment of the end of life—creating a work of transcendent beauty. For this concert, it is grouped with Pinkham’s popular cantata that uses texts from the Song of Solomon and a variety of musical textures to celebrate the many moods of love. Rounding out the program is Mendelssohn’s 42nd Psalm, performed in English. The composer cites this work as his “very best sacred composition”. Hosted by WBZ’s Jordan Rich, this inspirational night of music will strike a chord to raise awareness of the changing face of lung cancer. The Follen Angels, international jazz and cabaret recording artists, take center stage to benefit early detection lung cancer research. The evening features the much-loved songs by two of the most treasured composers of the 20th century, George Gershwin and Cole Porter. The NU Downbeats, Northeastern University’s a Capella singers appear as guest performers. Guest speakers include Dr. Jacob Sands, a leading lung cancer clinician and researcher at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute along with a representative of ALCMI to talk about lung cancer in younger people.

With the book by the comic genius Harvey Fierstein and music and lyrics by the Broadway master Jerry Herman (Mame), La Cage aux Folles has become one of the biggest hits of all time! La Cage aux Folles (“The Bird Cage”) is a St. Tropez nightclub owned by Georges. It features drag entertainment, including the star attraction, his romantic partner Albin. The couple has raised Georges’ son Jean Michele together. When Jean Michele becomes engaged to the daughter of a conservative politician who is determined to crack down on gay nightlife, Georges and Albin agree to masquerade as “normal” to meet the future in-laws. A hilarious web of misunderstandings ensues as the couple pretends to be straight, until Albin comes up with another plan. The multi Tony Award® winning musical is a delightful spectacle with a big heart.

During the waning months of World War II, in an effort to conserve their remaining armies, the officers of the Third Reich put their Hitlerjugend to the test. Based on true stories, young playwright and Academy of The Company Theatre student Alex Moon has created a riveting one act play The Werewolves, about the company of skilled Hitler Youth cadets. After the boys undergo a grim transformation into a squadron of SS guerrilla operatives to be sent behind enemy lines, they are left on their own. As their situation deteriorates and tensions flare, they discover the harsh reality of their Nazi idealism. The Werewolves premiered at Repertory Theatre in New York City in the summer of 2017. The Second Step is a community of survivors, advocates, and volunteers who foster the safety, stability, and well-being of those who have experienced domestic violence. We provide comprehensive services, including safety planning, legal advocacy, counseling, peer support, transitional housing, and other essential services to adults, youth, and children in Greater Boston and MetroWest.

Friends in Song a capella vocal ensemble presents its spring concert series Till all the Seas Gang Dry: Sea Shanties and Celtic Songs featuring light concert repertoire of tunes originating from the British Isles, and from the Celtic tradition, including ballads, and contemporary selections.
The group of 14 singers, many professional musicians, has performed across the region for eight years, recognized for their tightly woven harmonies and joyous concerts. Vocalists reside on the South Shore and Cape Cod, featuring Diana Barnes, Larry Carlson, Caroline Chapin, Carol Cybulska, Brian Dudley, Todd Herrmann, Lynne Hare, Chris Holl, Kate Holl, Anne Jones, Dan Miot, Michelle McGrath, Music Director William B. Richter and Sally Tucker. Admission to each concert is free, donations gratefully appreciated.

Pilgrim Festival Chorus’s (PFC) spring concert Ferns and Forest features John Corigliano’s work Fern Hill and Dan Forrest’s sublime Requiem for the Living, with 18-piece orchestra and organ accompaniment. These two diverse pieces of music are both celebrations of life and death. Fern Hill, based on the 1945 poem by Dylan Thomas, looks back on the author’s childhood summers spent on a farm in Wales. His musical language evokes some of America’s greatest composers, Copland, Barber, and Bernstein, and captures the joy and pain of looking back on the happy times of childhood. A Requiem traditionally is a mass for the dead but Dan Forrest chose to change the emphasis to the living. His piece is just as much for the living and their own struggle with pain and sorrow, as it is for remembering the dead. The work is becoming one of the composer’s best-known works to date, in large part due to its emotional range, inspiring listeners with feelings of hope.
Since 1999, PFC has delighted South Shore audiences with classical programming. More than 70 vocalists of all adult ages fill out the ensemble, dedicated to authentic choral singing. When street rat Aladdin frees a genie from a lamp, he finds his wishes granted. Soon thereafter he discovers that evil has other plans for the lamp — and for Princess Jasmine. But can Aladdin save Princess Jasmine and his love for her after she realizes that he isn't quite who he appears?
